Spring into a Senior Housing Community: Here’s How! – March 2018

When families make the decision to pursue further research into retirement living options, they often don’t know where to turn or how to start. There may also be misconceptions about what a community can provide when it comes to assistance with activities of daily living, dining and apartment styles. While the process is a simple one to our seasoned team members, we recognize that a few helpful tips can help ease the stress and make this transition a positive one!

Tip #1: Ask Your Burning Questions! There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your retirement living community search! There many misconceptions about the type of care and options you have, many revolving around cost and care. We’re less expensive than a nursing home, offer health care and conveniences like meals, activities and transportation at no extra cost, and you don’t need to worry about sharing an apartment with a roommate… unless you want to! We often find that people would have moved years earlier if they had known the facts!

Tip #2: Tour Before You Need Us Each of our communities are available for walk-in and scheduled tours for families in all stages of their retirement living search. Our advice is to do your research and have your top choices defined before a crisis (such as an illness or injury) occurs. This can ease the stress of a move and ensures a smooth transition. Wondering how we compare to another community you’re interested in? Let’s talk about it! We make it our goal to partner with local senior living options and provide a full picture for every family.

Tip #3: Reserve an Apartment If during your tour you feel that the community is the right fit for yourself or a loved one, don’t put it off… Reserve an apartment. The low-cost deposit simply serves as pre-paid rent and holds the apartment for up to 30 days while we help you make moving arrangements. It is also a good idea to get on a waiting list if your move is further in the future! Apartments rent quickly and you don’t want to miss out on securing the location you love!

After you’ve completed these three, simple steps, our compassionate and helpful team members will help you navigate the moving process with comfort and confidence. A comprehensive health care assessment will help you or your loved one understand the many options for assistance, and how we can personalize your service plan to your specific needs. Our team will organize all of the details up to the day of move-in, including helping you schedule a

reputable moving company, setting up phone service (where applicable) and aligning you with new primary care providers if you’d like.

As with any aspect of our organization, our focus is always on ‘Rolling out the Red Carpet for YOU,’ from your first call or tour, to your move-in and beyond!

Tax Season 2018: Deductions for Assisted Living Residents – February 2018

As accountants across the country gear up for their busy season, now is the perfect time to discuss the deductions that are available to those who live in retirement communities and receive Assisted Living health care services.

According to Section 213 of the Internal Revenue Code, you or a loved one may qualify for tax deductions for medical care if the expenses exceed 7.5% of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income. In fact, the monthly fee of an Assisted Living community is a medical expense if this level of care is prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner due to a medical condition. It further states that if a resident is living in an Assisted Living community because of a medical condition which requires them to be there, and meals and lodging are furnished, then the cost is considered a medical care expense.

Each year, Senior Housing’s individual communities provide itemized statements to residents to provide their tax professionals for this purpose. Knowing this information could help you make a decision to move to a community sooner than later, and we encourage you to reach out to us with any questions! We’re happy to provide resources and information that meet your individual needs.
