“I am submitting this nomination for the Dare to
Dream Award for Windsor Manor in Indianola.
Gayla Gilliland, manager of Windsor Manor in
Indianola discovered that one of her residents had a
long-time dream over more than 5 years that was yet
unfulfilled.
Rick, who has Multiple Sclerosis and uses an
electric chair, had always dreamed of going to
NASCAR. He was a huge fan of #8 Dale Ernhart Jr.
When Gayla and her staff realized how much this
dream meant to him, they went to work to make it
happen.
Rick did his research on the internet first and
discussed the idea with Brenda Roush, universal
worker, and she worked hard to make this happen.
Rick’s sister and her husband decided they would
like to take him to Talledaga for the races, but
they needed some help with Rick’s care. Brenda
Roush, universal worker for Windsor Manor,
volunteered to go on the trip with them. Rick had
other care needs such as a cold suit to regulate his
body temperature and also used a walker to ambulate.
This was a first time experience for Rick and he was
so excited. Last August his adventure began. They
left Windsor Manor on Thursday night and drove 19
hours where they stopped at Graceland first. The
next day they went to a truck race, Busch Series and
finally on Sunday the cup race! They made it back
home on Monday.
Gayla and the entire team worked together to make
this a reality. Schedules were rearranged, staff
picked up the shifts that needed to be covered so
this dream could come true.
Rick stated that he could never have gone with out
Brenda and the support of the Windsor Manor staff.
He was proud to announce that Brenda provided the
same great care on the clock and off the clock!!!
Rick stated he did A LOT of walking but Brenda was
with him every step of the way and he couldn’t have
realized his dream without everyone!
Congratulations to the Windsor Manor Indianola team
for making a dream come true and creating a lifetime
memory for Rick!!!!” |
